Ms. Xiaoxu Aleta Shang
Soprano, Vocal & Piano Teacher
Chinese-Australian soprano Xiaoxu Aleta Shang received her formal musical training at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she completed postgraduate studies in performance and opera with scholarships.
Her operatic roles include La Princesse in L’enfant et les sortilèges (Ravel), Hannchen in Die Opernprobe (Lortzing), La Fée in Cendrillon (Massenet), Prince Charming in Cendrillon (Viardot), Emilie in Émilie (Kaija Saariaho), Soprano Solo (understudy) in Haydn’s Nelson Mass, and the Second Woman in Dido and Aeneas (Purcell).
In addition to opera, she has appeared extensively in recitals featuring art song and operatic repertoire, opera galas, and as a chorister in major works including Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s L’Anima del Filosofo, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, and operas such as Tosca and La Bohème by Puccini, performing in Australia and overseas. She has also been featured as a principal artist in a range of music festivals, including performances at Bondi and other major international festival events.
Aleta has been tutoring singing for many years, working with students of all levels and ages. She is a vocal teacher in the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Open Academy program, providing personalized study plans tailored to each student. Her lessons focus on developing healthy vocal technique, performance skills, musical appreciation, and multilingual diction (including French, German, Italian, and English).
In addition to her vocal expertise, Aleta is also a professional piano and early-stage music educator. Drawing from her background as a performer, she inspires students to appreciate music from an artistic and expressive perspective. Her piano lessons combine solid technical and theoretical foundations with fun, creative, and interactive teaching methods, helping children and adults alike develop musical curiosity, taste, and confidence while exploring the beauty of piano playing
She has extensive experience in preparing students for auditions, AMEB exams, and performances, and teaches a wide range of musical styles including opera, classical, musical theatre, jazz, and contemporary music.
